Setting 1: The time period of Number the Star was during World War II. Number the Stars takes place in the capital of Denmark, Copenhagen. Copenhagen is a beautiful city that is run by a caring king, King Christian X. The only problem about Copenhagen is that German soldiers patrol the streets. Good description of this setting!
Setting 2: Number the Stars also takes place at Uncle Henrik's house. Uncle Henrik house is near the Baltic Sea. It is surrounded by beautiful meadows with long grasses. Uncle Henrik owns a cow and a cat. The animals are not part of the setting!
Chapter 1: Annemarie, Ellen and, Kristi, AnneMarie's little sister finish their day at school and decide to race from one block to the next. They are racing with their little sister and she is trying to keep up with them and they round the corner and run in to 2 German soldiers who question them about why they are running. After that they say they will not speak of that ever again. They go back to their home and tell Ellen's mom everything.
Chapter 2
This chapter is about King Christian who is the King of Denmark. AnneMarie would go with her sister Lise to wave to the King every morning. The King was nice to the people of Denmark and the people liked the King too. Lise died two weeks before her wedding.
Chapter 3
At this chapter, Kristi's button breaks and they need to go to the button shop. They find out that the button shop is closed. They think that the owner of the button shop is sick and didn't open for the day. Then at night, Peter tells AnnMarie's family, that places run by Jewish people are being shut down by the Nazi's.
Chapter 4
Kristi gets new shoes made out of fish scales because there is no leather in Denmark anymore. Kristi does not like her shoes, so Mr. Rosen paints them black with ink to make them look more like leather. The Nazi's have taken the synagogue list of all of the Jews in Denmark and this list would show where they lived, their names, and how many family members. Ellen's family has to stay at AnnMarie's house, and they have to hide from the German soldiers.
Chapter 5
The German soldiers come and search AnnMarie's apartment and AnnMarie and Ellen woke up when the soldiers knocked at their door. They woke up very quickly and tore the Star of David necklace off of Ellen's neck. Everyone in the Johansen's family are blond and Ellen was dark brown haired so the soldiers questioned her. Mr. Johansen found a picture of Ellen as a baby to prove that Ellen was their child with lighter hair.
Chapter 6 Mrs. Johansen decides that she will be going to there uncles house with the girls. The soldier on the train asked them if they were going to celebrate new years. he knew if they answered yes they were jews. But they said no we are not tricked and
of they went to Uncle Henric's house. Their little sister almost blew it.

The setting takes place at Uncle Henrik's house in Gilleje, Denmark with his house located on the Baltic Sea.
He has many fields of long grass but he grows no crops. The girls run through the grass meadows all the way down to the Baltic Sea, but their mom is not happy with them. They could get caught by the German soldiers and they would might not be able to explain who Ellen was.
chapter 8
The girls are having warm oatmeal with cream and this was very special because cream was a treat. The soldiers took the cream and milk away from the people. After breakfast the girls played all day running around, picking flowers, and playing with the cat and the cow.
Uncle Henrik tells every one that he is leaving tomorrow morning for a fishing trip and says that the girl's Great Aunt Berti has died.
But Annemarie has never heard of this aunt.
Chapter 9
Annemarie finds out that her mom was lying about Great Aunt Berti; and that there was no such person. But there was a funeral for her and all of her friends came. Then Uncle Henrik came back to the house with Ellen's parents and Ellen. Finally they were all together.

Uncle Henric leaves the house with the funeral to check on his fishing boat and the soldiers come to the funeral and ask alot of questions.
they even slapped Mrs. Johansen for talking too much about Aunt Berti's death and they finally beilieved her explanation of the
death and left.

Peter is giving away warm clothing to all the jewish familys, these things were in the coffin and it did not have any Aunt Berti in it. In fact it had many clothes, jackets, and sweaters to keep them warm. Peter led everyone but the Rosens to the boat. Finally the
Rosens could join them later and everyone would be headed for Sweden were they would be safe.
chapter 12
In this chapter Annemarie says goodbye to the Rosens for the last time and then she falls a sleep for a short while. Once she wakes up and sees Kristi, she asks where her mom is. She then looks out the window and sees her mom laying on the ground and sprints outside to help her mom.
chapter 13
Annemarie hurries to help her mother with her broken ankle. It turns out the mother tripped on the packet that Peter had given Mr. Rosen.
Mr. Rosen dropped it because he tripped too. The people on the boat could not leave without this package.
so Annemarie quickly hid it in a picnic basket and ran out into the night to find Uncle Henric.
chapter 14
Annemarie makes her way through the cold dark woods and it reminded herself of the story " Little Red Riding Hood" because she
heard a loud growl. This time it was not a fairy tale, it was real dogs with soldiers. She stepped out and was face to face with
real soldiers and real dogs .

Annemarie remembers her moms advice that if she were to get into this situation, she should act like a little silly girl who
was bringing her uncle a lunch basket. The soldiers questioned her and grabbed all the food and ate it. All that was left was a napkin and the packet and the soldiers ripped it up and threw it on the ground. When they left, she quickly picked up the pieces and ran. Finally she gave Uncle Henric the lunch and the packet and Uncle Henric was able to go to Sweden were it was safe.
chapter 16
In this chapter Annemarie helps with the farm chores because her mom's ankle is broken and Uncle Henric sends them a letter that everyone made it back to Sweden safely. He also told her that Lisa and Peter are in on a secret plan to save the Jews. Uncle Henric told Annemarie that the hankerchief had rabbit blood on it to through off the dogs. This gave the Jews time so Uncle Henric could hide them in his small fishing boat. The soldiers almost found these Jews.
chapter 17
It took over 2 years for the war to end. After the war ended the people celebrated in the streets of Denmark waving the Danish flag everywhere possible. The Jews were so happy to have the war over. Peter died at the hands of the Germans after being caught and killed in Copenhagen. Before his death Peter said he wanted to be buried next Lise, but the German's would not grant this wish.
